Reverend Elmo Johnson

Reverend Elmo Johnson - Pastor of Rose of Sharon Missionary Baptist church .

Rev. Elmo Johnson was born in Natchitoches, Louisiana, on October 12, 1953. He grew up in a small town with a very large family which consisted of several siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. They were all very close and remain that way even today.

In 1968, Rev. Johnson’s parents moved the family to Houston, Texas, where he and his siblings attended public school in the community of Acres Home. After finishing high school, Rev. Johnson went on to Houston Baptist University on a baseball scholarship. Although, he opted not to pursue a career in baseball, he received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Physical Education in 1977.

In 1984, Rev. Johnson began as the pastor of Rose of Sharon Baptist Church. At this time, he saw a great need for positive change in the Rose of Sharon community. Rose of Sharon is situated in the center of Fourth Ward or Freedman’s Town, as it is more historically known. This community is known as one of the oldest African-American neighborhoods in the city of Houston.

Today, Rev. Johnson is working toward his doctorate and will be teaching at JBTS-Houston soon. We welcome him to the faculty!
